Explore the Heartbeat of Lincoln – The Lower Town Trail
Welcome to Lincoln’s Lower Town, where the city’s industrious spirit and rich urban heritage come to life. This trail takes you through the vibrant lower half of the city, offering a unique perspective on how Lincoln thrived—and continues to thrive—as a centre of innovation, commerce, and community.
Linked to the upper city by the famous Steep Hill, the lower section showcases the dynamic side of Lincoln. Walk through streets shaped by centuries of municipal history, pass architectural gems that housed civic leaders, and stand before sites of industrial achievement that reached far beyond Britain’s borders.
At the heart of it all lies the Brayford Pool, the historic waterway that served as Lincoln’s gateway to the wider world. Once the cradle of Roman settlement and later a hub for trade and transport, today it remains a lively waterfront full of energy, dining, and culture.
This trail uncovers the grit and glory of Lincoln’s working past and its transformation into a modern, buzzing city—without ever losing touch with its roots.
Come walk the Lower Town Trail—where Lincoln’s lifeblood still flows.

This walk covers a route, which is about 2.5 miles long 4 km), from where your car is parked to the Usher Gallery. It should take you about 2-3 hours of walking to complete, but some of the streets are fairly steep to climb.
