TrailTale’s mission is to connect people with their local heritage, nature, and high streets through engaging digital walking routes. In 2021, one of our most successful collaborations was with Bolton Borough Council, producing a series of trails that not only showcase the borough’s rich history but also elevate community pride and belonging.
From the outset, a key aim was to celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of Bolton. Communities from Pakistan, India, and East Africa, whose contributions shaped the borough’s industrial past, are central to The Communities of Bolton walk. By highlighting human stories, the project personalises heritage, strengthens identity, and fosters a deeper sense of belonging among residents. It also unearths lesser-known histories, ensuring they are preserved and shared widely.
Accessibility was another priority. TrailTale designed routes mindful of mobility needs and introduced new features such as AltText and audio descriptions to support users with visual impairments. These additions not only enhanced inclusivity but also set a new standard for how heritage can be experienced digitally.
Local collaboration was vital. Working with Bolton specialists, community leaders and local societies brought hidden stories and overlooked details to light, enriching the routes with authentic community voices. This ensured that the trails did more than document places—they told stories that resonate with people who live there.
Crucially, the project offered both physical and digital access. During the pandemic, the option to explore routes virtually provided continuity, enabling people shielding or unable to leave home to stay connected with their heritage.
The result is a suite of historically rich, child-friendly, bike-friendly trails that cater to all abilities. Beyond showcasing Bolton’s past, the project has strengthened community identity, highlighted cultural diversity, and promoted local businesses. It stands as a model for inclusive, participatory heritage practice across the UK.
Bolton Council Deputy Leader Cllr Hilary Fairclough said: “Bolton Council and TrailTale have created a really exciting and historically rich app. The trails are designed for different users wanting a leisurely stroll, or an invigorating hike, while also providing both child-friendly and bicycle-friendly routes.”
