Discover Berkhamsted – Where History Meets Charm
Step into a town where history and character walk hand in hand. Berkhamsted, once a strategic jewel in the crown of Norman England, rose to prominence when William the Conqueror ordered the construction of its mighty castle—a fortress that secured the route from London to the Midlands and helped shape the nation’s early history.
This trail invites you to explore over 500 years of heritage, from the timber-framed elegance of Dean Incent’s House to the vintage glamour of the iconic Rex Cinema. As you stroll down the High Street, admire a delightful mix of period architecture, quirky details, independent shops, and award-winning restaurants.
But don’t stop there—venture toward the river, and you’ll uncover even more hidden gems, scenic spots, and fascinating stories waiting to be discovered.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a curious explorer, or simply in search of a picturesque day out, the Berkhamsted Trail promises a journey through time in one of Hertfordshire’s most enchanting towns.
Come walk where conquerors, kings, and everyday stories collide—only in Berkhamsted.

This walk covers a route, which is about 1.5 miles long (2.5 kms), and should take you about 1 to 2 hours of easy walk to complete.
I suggest parking your car next to the Castle. The walk ends there as well.
