Step into the rich history and charm of East Retford, a town steeped in tradition and pride since receiving its Royal Charter in 1246. This trail invites you to explore a market town that has weathered the centuries with resilience, overcoming challenges such as plagues and storms to grow into the vibrant community it is today.
Now part of North Nottinghamshire’s Bassetlaw District, Retford continues to honour its heritage with a Mayor and Charter Trustees dedicated to preserving the rights and customs of this historic market town. The traditions established nearly 800 years ago are still alive and celebrated here, offering visitors a unique glimpse into a proud past.
As you follow this route, you’ll find yourself on Bridge Place, the town’s main pedestrian thoroughfare. Lined with an array of inviting restaurants, pubs, and shops, it’s the perfect spot to pause and enjoy the local flavour. Whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely meal, a quick drink, or a bit of shopping, Bridge Place has something for everyone.
This trail combines the best of East Retford’s history, culture, and modern-day charm, creating a memorable experience for visitors. So, take a stroll through time, discover the stories of this ancient market town, and enjoy all that Retford has to offer.
This walk covers a route, which is about 1.6 miles long (2.6 km), from and back to the car park. It should take you about 2 hours of easy walk to complete.
I suggest parking your car in the Shoppers Car Park, In Bridgegate, next to number 21, DN22 6AQ. The cost is £1.30 for two hours.
