Let’s visit Chester– one of Britain’s most extraordinary and historic cities, where every street and stone tells a story. Enclosed by some of the most complete Roman walls in the country, Chester offers a unique journey through time, with landmarks from every era beautifully preserved.
This TrailTale walking route focuses on the northern half of the city centre, perfectly complementing our southern route. Along the way, you’ll discover iconic sights like the famous Chester Rows – the unique, elevated, covered walkways that line the city’s four main streets – as well as the magnificent cathedral and charming medieval lanes that surround it.
A highlight of the tour is the walk along the ancient city walls, offering sweeping views across the skyline and up-close encounters with towers, gates, and hidden corners that many visitors miss.
With so much to see, the city is too rich to cover in one go. That’s why we’ve created two interconnected routes. This northern route can be enjoyed on its own or linked directly with the southern trail for the full Chester experience.
So grab your camera and your curiosity – it’s time to explore Chester’s remarkable past, one step at a time.

This walk covers a route of about 1.4 miles long (2.2 km). It should take you about 2 to 3 hours of walking to complete.
