TrailTale

Welcome to Colchester – Britain’s first Roman capital and one of the country’s most historic towns. This TrailTale walking route will guide you through centuries of fascinating heritage, from ancient ruins to elegant 17th-century architecture.

At the heart of the town stands Colchester Castle, a mighty Norman fortress built on the foundations of a Roman temple. It’s the perfect place to begin your journey into Colchester’s remarkable past. As you explore, you’ll discover Roman relics scattered throughout the town, including surviving walls and gateways that echo the city’s imperial origins.

But Colchester’s story doesn’t end with the Romans. The town became a thriving centre for Christianity in the medieval era, and the remains of its priories and churches offer peaceful beauty and historical intrigue.

One of the trail’s highlights is the charming Dutch Quarter – a picturesque area filled with timber-framed 17th-century houses. This neighbourhood was home to skilled silk weavers from the Low Countries, whose influence still shapes the town’s character today.

And don’t miss the striking Jumbo Water Tower – one of England’s most impressive Victorian landmarks.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious, this walk offers a captivating glimpse into Colchester’s layered and lively past.

This walk covers a route, which is about 2 miles long (3.4 kms), and should take you 2 to 3 hours of easy walk to complete.
