Step Into History – Discover Hertford
Welcome to Hertford, the historic heart of Hertfordshire and a town steeped in stories that helped shape England—and beyond.
This trail takes you through a town mentioned as far back as Saxon times, a place that played a key role in early English religious life and the defence of the realm. Explore the remains of Hertford Castle, once a stronghold guarding the county, and imagine the royal intrigues and historic decisions that took place within its walls.
As you wander the charming streets, you’ll uncover how Hertford blossomed—from a medieval town to a vibrant county capital. It’s home to one of England’s most prestigious schools, and even holds the distinction of being the namesake and inspiration for Hartford, Connecticut, founded by English settlers from this very town.
Rich in architecture, heritage, and character, the Hertford Trail is your invitation to explore centuries of legacy, tucked into a walkable and welcoming town centre.
Come trace the footsteps of kings, scholars, and pioneers—right here in Hertford.

This town trail, which starts at the short-stay car park, takes you through all the important places of Hertford.
The walk covers a route, which is about 1.8 mile long (3 kms), and should take you about 2 hours of easy walk to complete.
