Welcome to enchanting Morpeth, where centuries of fascinating history await your discovery! Nestled within the embrace of the winding River Wansbeck, this charming market town holds so many captivating tales that we’ve crafted four distinct trails to help you uncover its secrets.
Today, we invite you to explore our Bridge Street trail, which meanders through the historic eastern heart of Morpeth. While the town’s strategic position – protected on three sides by the river – might seem perfect for Roman settlement, Morpeth’s documented history actually begins in 1272, giving it a distinctly medieval character.
Bridge Street itself tells a dramatic story of resilience. Once home to numerous religious buildings, a devastating fire in 1689 reshaped the streetscape. Today’s elegant architecture, dating primarily from the late 17th century onwards, rose from those ashes to create the stunning vista you’ll experience.
Join us as we walk these historic streets, where every corner holds a story waiting to be told. Let’s begin our journey through Morpeth’s rich heritage!
This trail was commissioned by the Morpeth Town Council and was assisted by a local historian.
This walk spans a route of about 0.8 miles (1.3 km) and should take about 1 to 2 hours to complete at a comfortable walking pace.
