Discover the Hidden Heritage of Soham

Nestled between Cambridge and Ipswich lie a collection of charming towns and villages, each with its own fascinating history and unique character. Over the years, TrailTale has explored many of these communities, creating heritage trails that reveal stories and landmarks often overlooked by visitors and even local residents.

One of the most rewarding places to explore is Soham.

Although modest in size, Soham boasts a history stretching back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that people have lived here since prehistoric times, and the town’s rich heritage can still be discovered around almost every corner. Beyond its historic streets, Soham is also surrounded by five areas recognised for their special environmental and wildlife importance, making it an attractive destination for both history lovers and nature enthusiasts.

To help visitors uncover the town’s hidden treasures, commissioned by the town council, TrailTale worked closely with local historians to create a self-guided heritage trail packed with fascinating stories and surprising discoveries.

Among the highlights is one of Soham’s most unusual landmarks. Tucked away near St Andrew’s Parish Church, behind the Fountain Inn, stands a rare Weighing Tower. Easily missed if you don’t know what you’re looking for, it is one of only two surviving examples in England. Rather than relying on a conventional weighbridge, the tower housed an ingenious weighing system. Carts were suspended from a large scale-like mechanism and balanced against counterweights, enabling officials to measure the load accurately and assess taxes on the goods being transported.

Just across the road stands another remarkable survivor: a former ambulance shed. Only four examples of these early ambulance buildings are known to remain in England, offering a rare glimpse into the development of local healthcare and emergency services.

These are just two of more than twenty fascinating stories waiting to be discovered along the trail. From medieval landmarks and hidden historical curiosities to stories of local people and events, the Soham Heritage Trail brings the town’s past vividly to life.

Why not set aside half a day to explore Soham? Follow the trail, uncover its remarkable history, and enjoy the town’s welcoming cafés, pubs, restaurants, and independent businesses along the way.
